i got this coffee maker for my mom's birthday since her $10 off brand maker often overflowed and was probably a fire hazard.
she loves it, and it got me back on coffee.
without the filter inserts it brews a very good cup of coffee and even after nearly two hours on the highest heat setting it doesn't taste burnt, and it keeps the coffee VERY hot. my mom said after her first cup that it was even hotter than diner coffee.
the various settings are all explained in the manual fairly well, and are pretty easy to figure out. the strong brew setting is great, it makes a powerful cup without making it excessively bitter.
just know that the strong setting is very slow to brew, it takes about 90 seconds to brew a cup as compared to about a minute per cup on normal
and make sure you run some vinegar through it before you make any coffee
