I bought one in black at costco recently, I'll be taking it back.
Drawbacks in the design include all of the following problems:
the entire top opens up revealing the coffee basket and water tank; steam is not channeled though / contained in the grounds basket but instead condenses all over the inside of the machine. This means a slight jar (getting coffee) causes condensation to run down into the tank, causing the maker to burp out more water/steam while you're serving coffee.
The cutoff knob that stops coffee from dripping onto the hot plate while the carafe is out does not work, so that unexpected burp of water into the grounds results in coffee dripping onto the hot plate.
There are overfill prevention holes in the back of the water tank that are just open holes, if you are not careful filling the unit with water, you will pour water right out those holes.
The coffee basket is in 4 pieces including a paper pre-filter, which as far as I can tell, does very little for the coffee, especially if you already use filtered water. It appears to be a sediment trap to me, and does not appear to do anything other than divert water flow to the edge of the grounds basket.
The grounds permanent filter basket has a solid bottom. Combine the solid bottom and the diversion of water from the "water filter" and hot water does not flow through the center of the grounds as much as around the edges, I feel this makes for a particularly inefficient extraction.
The water reservoir and grounds basket are in an open-box design, therefor putting freshly ground coffee into the basket for tomorrow morning's brew will cause the grinds to become hydrated before brewing, making the grounds essentially stale.
All of the problems stem from it's design. I do not see a work-around.
